\"\"<\/a>\u201cHi darling!\u201d I said as I walked into Sal\u2019s room and she wrapped me into a delicious hug and equally wonderful kiss.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi. You\u2019re in a good mood,\u201d she said noting the excited smile on my face, \u201cwas it that much fun sitting in a Temple and taking vows? Even a Xentoran<\/a> one?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t know, I didn\u2019t take them. Will you marry me?\u201d I said so excited it actually came out all in a single casual tone.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day, sure, but what do you mean you didn\u2019t take them?\u201d she asked setting me on her lap as she sat down on the odd bit of furniture she had called a \u2018Chase Lounge\u2019. \u201cYou\u2019ve wanted to be a priestess for \u2026 for your whole life, you\u2019ve been studying and working at the Temple for \u2026 are you feeling all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel wonderful! I mean, Salandra, will you marry me \u2013 like as in will you say \u2018yes\u2019? I\u2019m going to be an apothecary and herbalist. I might take a Healer\u2019s vows later, but I don\u2019t know yet. There\u2019s a lot to be said for doing that in a Temple rather than in some consecrated room or something,\u201d I explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow would you know? The only time I know of that you saw a Healer was at<\/em> the Temple. And, I guess, when we\u2019re older. It\u2019d be kind of silly to get married when neither of us has any money that doesn\u2019t come from an allowance,\u201d Sal said looking rather like she was concerned I\u2019d gone quite mad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do. I\u2019m apprenticed with a very nice apothecary and herbal shoppe. I start tomorrow. I already know a lot, they\u2019ll just be teaching me more of the mediciney bit, and recipes for teas and the like. So, now will you please stop avoiding the question and answer me? Will you marry me or won\u2019t you?\u201d I said with what I know must have been a mischievous gleam in my eyes as I\u2019d long ago realised I wasn\u2019t being perfectly clear in my excitement and was being horribly amused by my beloved\u2019s confusion.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou \u2026\u201d Sal looked shocked, mildly faint, and finally said, \u201cAre you serious?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re<\/em> the silly one, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut, but \u2026 you, you \u2026 when\u2019d you decide to become an Herbalist?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the Temple before I was supposed to take my vows. It dawned on me that that wasn\u2019t what I wanted anymore. That wasn\u2019t the direction my life should take if I want to spend my life with you. No, I wouldn\u2019t be forbidden or even discouraged from marriage, you know that, and I wouldn\u2019t have<\/em> to live at the Temple, but \u2026\u201d I sighed and looked around the room for inspiration and, finding none, I gazed into the dark pools of her eyes. \u201cPriesthood, to me, shouldn\u2019t seem like a job. I shouldn\u2019t be able to leave it. I don\u2019t think less of priests who have their own homes, and their own lives, but those priests are rare for a reason. I realised I just couldn\u2019t be one of them. I also couldn\u2019t not be your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shrugged and raised her hands to my lips, \u201cI want to marry you, and I want to feel that my life and time are my own to give to you. I love growing things, I love plants, and I love to help those who need help. I haven\u2019t the head or the patience for doctoring, but I think I could manage to make sense enough out of medicines and how to use them.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me mouthing silence for a moment, and judging by the way her lips were working she wouldn\u2019t have been voicing anything but nonsense for a moment in any case. Finally she stammered out, \u201cS-so, now you\u2019re an apprentice apothecary, and you want to know if I\u2019ll marry you? You mean right now?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I was thinking \u2026 I was thinking when we could work out a date, and however long it takes to corral everyone in your family you think would be important, and I\u2019d have to figure out where a few of my fathers and my dad have got to and I\u2019d like a few of my siblings there too, to say nothing of the whole Xentoran year we’ll need to live as one before we can say our vows.\u201d Softer I said, \u201cSal, please, I\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked about to say several things but just as suddenly she just blinked with a tear in her eye and looked very thoughtful for a moment before saying, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

We smiled, and kissed and sat there in each other\u2019s arms for several saenead before she finally asked, \u201cSo. Want to go tell everyone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet. I like holding you and don\u2019t want to let go yet. Besides \u2014 you were so funny when I asked the first time, it might be fun to think of a way to have fun with the announcement\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
